Shea Family Foundation Award Upgrades All Souls Playground and Classrooms

All Souls School in Alhambra is the recipient of numerous grants through the John & Dorothy Shea Family Foundation. “All Souls Catholic School is honored to be a recipient of the generosity of the Shea Family and the many benefits that will be afforded our school from building improvement projects completed and from more projects that are underway,” says school principal, Carrie Fuller.

The funds have been used to upgrade the school playground with the installation of new, soft surface under the playground equipment creating a safe and kid-friendly environment for the students. This year's projects included many building modifications including refurbished classrooms, remodeled restrooms, a new security gate system & security camera with additional projects in progress. Outdoors there are new water fountains, two rows of trees with an irrigation system, and a children's garden which allows students to explore and play and build friendships in a safe environment.

The John & Dorothy Shea Family are well known for their generosity in funding major school projects for public and archdiocesan Catholic schools in the Los Angeles vicinity since about 1985. According to Mary Jo Dangel of The Tidings newspaper in an article published in the St. Anthony Messenger magazine, “John & Dorothy Shea, a local area couple, believe in investing their time and money into these school projects because they believe that kids who attend Catholic schools are likely to become adults who will make the world a better place.” John Shea said, “It really is fun. When you invest some of your time and money in a project that ends up successful and helps kids - and helps community - it gives you a good feeling.” Fun isn’t John’s only motivation: “My Catholic faith pushes me to do what I do, it governs my actions," he says.

The Shea Family has a reputation for building significant things that have a lasting impact such as the Hoover Dam which continues to supply a steady flow of water and energy to thousands of people in Los Angeles and beyond, and for many years to come. John Shea is president and chairman of the board of the J.F. Shea Company, Inc., an outgrowth of a business his grandfather began in 1887 in Portland, Oregon. John’s dad and uncle joined the business after World War I. One of their significant projects during the early 1930’s was Boulder Dam (now called Hoover Dam), named one of this country’s seven modern civil-engineering wonders in 1955. Today, John and his cousins, Edmund and Peter Shea, are co-owners of the company that has built and sold thousands of homes, and has completed heavy-construction projects exceeding $1 billion throughout the United States.

School Principal, Carrie Fuller invites the community to visit the school and see the many improvements to the campus provided by the Shea Family. “We are delighted to have the public visit our school and learn about our two, dual language immersion programs - offering Mandarin/English and Spanish/English to children in TK to 3rd grade," says Ms. Fuller.
